Our volunteers selflessly give thousands of hours each year to helping our patients, families, and organization. Volunteers work in our office, participate in staffing special events, visit with patients, create crafts, and perform dozens of other activities. Volunteers are truly one of our most valuable resources! Burke Hospice & Palliative Care is always looking for friendly, helpful people to join our volunteer “family.” Whether you have two hours to give or 200, you can make a difference at Burke Hospice! Scheduling is very flexible; you may choose to work during the day, in the evenings, or on weekends.
Check out the many volunteer opportunities available for you.
Are you a good listener? Do you enjoy talking with people and swapping stories? Are you patient and compassionate? Our patients/families would love to have you for a friend and companion. You may choose to visit patients’ homes, nursing facilities, or our Hospice House. Scheduling is flexible.
Every Patient Care Volunteer will have his or her special experiences and insight to share with your family. Their primary goal is to ease the stress on patient and caregiver.
Give "rest breaks" for tired caregivers
Keep patients company with social visits
Listen - Provide emotional support
Check in with friendly phone calls
Assist family members with small tasks
We try to match volunteers and families with similar interests or backgrounds. The volunteer will schedule visits with the family as both their schedules allow. Visits can include anything from conversation to card games:
Talking about memories (and recording them)
Looking at family photo albums
Reading books or poetry aloud
Watching TV, movies, or sports events
Listening to music
Praying or reading from religious texts
Participate in calling Bingo in residential facilities to allow patients to compete in friendly games.
Chick-Fil-A Soup Delivery
Help deliver comfort to newly admitted patients in the form of warm, comforting Chick-Fil-A soup.
Health Fairs and Festivals
Assisting in staffing and special events that promote the organization and mission.
Reach out to others by participating in shared volunteer opportunities with Meals-On-Wheels
Hospice House Greeters
Welcome visitors to the Hospice House with a compassionate smile. Greeters are needed daily, 8:00AM to 8:00PM.
Thrifts & Gifts Store
Located in downtown Valdese, all proceeds generated from the thrift store benefit our patient care programs! Hang clothes, greet shoppers, and help display our donated treasures! Voted “Best Thrift Store” by readers of the Morganton News Herald every year since 2011!
Walk beside those who have lost a loved one on their new path. Combine phone calls with cards, emails, and maybe some in-person visits.
Take a large floral arrangement donated to our House and create special bouquets and displays for our patients' rooms as well as home hospice patients. Use your creativity!
"Friends of Hospice" Crafts Committee
Brighten our patients' days by making small gifts and crafts. Meets monthly.
The Vet-to-Vet Volunteer Program pairs recruited Veteran Volunteers with hospice patients who have been identified as Veterans. Once paired with hospice patients who also have military experience, Veteran Volunteers have the unique ability to relate and connect with Veteran patients and their families.
