Palliative Care

Relief—Comfort—Answers

When you are diagnosed with a serious illness, you may not know where to turn. In addition to already-troubling symptoms, you may feel overwhelmed or hopeless. Palliative Care will help you manage your condition at home, while providing all the information you need to make the right decisions about your health care.

A Time to Talk

Palliative Care seeks to comfort the whole person, not just an illness. Care begins with an initial consultation from the Burke Hospice and Palliative Care doctor or nurse practitioner (NP). During the visit….

  • The physician or nurse practitioner will visit your home, often for an hour or more
  • He or she will recommend ways to relieve your physical symptoms
  • The palliative care physician or NP will then confer with your doctor on the best approach to easing your symptoms

The palliative care doctor or NP will also ask about your social and emotional well-being. Depending on your needs, he or she may suggest other professionals for your care team:

  • Social Worker
Connects you with local services that can help
Helps with financial, emotional and/or family issues
  • Chaplain
Visits in addition to your church family or acts as your clergy member
Helps you and/or family members with issues of belief
  • Volunteer
Provides companionship and a link to your community
Gives family members a "rest break" if needed

Palliative Care is available at any point during your illness. Medicare and Medicaid both provide for Palliative Care services, as well as some private insurance plans. If you do not have coverage, Burke Hospice and Palliative Care offer a flexible billing policy. No one has ever been turned away for an inability to pay.

If Palliative Care sounds right for you, call Burke Hospice and Palliative Care today at 828-879-1601. Your doctor or nurse may also call us to arrange a consultation.
