Why a thrift shop?Rising costs, possible Medicare cuts, and an increased number of patients in need have caused hospices all over the US, including Burke Hospice, to look for alternate sources of income. One venture that has been successful for many nonprofits is a resale/thrift store. The board of directors and staff at Burke Hospice began researching and planning for our store in 2010. Burke Hospice Thrifts & Gifts opened for business on the gray, wet morning of March 9, 2011. We opened the doors early so the first shoppers waiting outside could get out of the rain! Since then, we have had an excellent support from the community, including being voted "Best Thrift Store" by readers of the Morganton News-Herald in 2011. Shopping with purposeBecause every purchase at Burke Hospice Thrifts & Gifts benefits our patients, you can feel good about shopping for furniture, clothes, antiques, and more. Newly-donated items go onto our shelves every day, and we often have closeout or seasonal sales. You never know what you might find! Donate Your Stuff!We depend on donations from the community to keep our shelves stocked. Please donate those housewares, clothes, handbags, books, furniture, and anything else hanging around the house to Burke Hospice Thrifts & Gifts. (Note: We even accept stained or damaged clothing for a fabric recycling program, so that old painter's smock can help our patients, too!) You'll receive a receipt for tax purposes with every donation. We happily accept your boxes, bags and whole carloads of stuff at the rear of the store during business hours.
